XMir does not support Virtual Machines at this time, so trying it in a VM will only give you the fallback to X.org.

After booting the system, a terminal window with the unity-system-compositor log will display.

To confirm that you are running XMir, open a new terminal and type ps ax | grep system-comp. You should see several lines of output with unity-system-compositor in them.

Use unetbootin, LinuxLiveUSB creator, dd, or grml2usb to create a bootable flash drive. You can also use software like grml-rescueboot to add the ISO to grub.
